TASER changes name in shift to software, services for police

To underscore that change, Taser said it was taking on a new corporate name - Axon Enterprise, Inc. - drawn from the Axon cameras the company produces, rather than the controversial electric devices, which can deliver a painful shock to a small area or temporarily incapacitate someone.

The Seattle Police Department decided in November to purchase body cameras from the Taser unit for 850 officers.

Along with the announcement of the name change, the company announced it would begin a year-long program to give every officer a body camera, an Evidence.com unlimited pro license for data management, body mounts for cameras and other useful technology that helps agencies store, analyze and share the data they collect using the technologies.

"We believe these cameras are more than just tools to protect communities and the officers who serve them", Smith said.

A body-camera maker is offering some USA police departments a chance to try out their goods for a year.

Axon will also provide supporting hardware, software, data storage, training, and support to police departments, free of cost for one year.

Low turnout will hand victory to Le Pen, rivals warn
The final result of an election that is being watched closely around the world is still seen as highly unpredictable. Le Pen blames the European Union and its common currency for stifling the French economy.

In regard to the name change, Smith said it more accurately reflects the company Axon has become.

Police departments already in negotiations for work with Axon can't participate.

"Our core goal is to have every officer in the world carry a TASER, deploy an Axon camera and be connected to the Axon network", the company said in its annual report a year ago. More information on the offer is available here. The Axon-related sales saw a much bigger jump, almost doubling from a year earlier, while Taser sales went up by about a quarter.

The Boston association, citing a 2016 Rand Corp. study, said in a statement that "officers wearing body cameras are no less likely to use force but are 15 percent more likely to be assaulted than officers without cameras". Tasers are gunlike devices that stun and temporarily incapacitate a person. Last year, $202.6 million of its $268.2 million in revenue came from its weapons segment, mostly in the form of replacement cartridges. He said he found himself explaining, again and again, to prospective customers that Taser makes more than electrical weapons.

" It's time for change". Many will work on Axon's expanding artificial intelligence technology, which the company hopes will one day significantly reduce the paperwork officers have to complete.
