One of Penn State's trustees has sparked outrage after saying he is "running out of sympathy" for the "so-called victims" of convicted child molester and former Penn State football assistant coach Jerry Sandusky.

Spanier - like the late Penn State football coach, Joe Paterno - repeatedly said he never knew of Sandusky's abuse.

The foreman of the jury that convicted former Pennsylvania State University President Graham B. Spanier of child endangerment said Thursday that he believes the verdict was a "mistake", and that he was conflicted about not changing his vote and possibly forcing a mistrial.

Spanier was found not guilty of conspiracy and a second child endangerment count at the same trial. "As you learned, Graham Spanier never knew Sandusky abused anyone".

The comments by Al Lord were reported Thursday by The Chronicle of Higher Education ( http://bit.ly/2nooEuK ). "They (former Athletic Director Tim Curley and former Senior Vice President for Business and Finance Gary Schultz) did not make him understand how serious a situation this might be". He said he believes the extent of Sandusky's crimes - the longtime assistant under Paterno was convicted of sexually abusing 10 boys and now is serving a decades-long prison sentence - has clouded judgment of other top officials, including Spanier.

Sandusky himself is serving 30-60 years after he was convicted in 2012 of molesting several boys over a period of years.

One man identified as a victim of Sandusky testified for the prosecution at Spanier's trial.

Race weekend kicks off at Martinsville Speedway
The field for the STP 500 for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series will be set by the rule book. "That is really where we are at". Both drivers get little time at home these days, as they travel the country from track to track.

Spanier, 68, who served as president from 1995 until he was forced to resign in 2011, faces up to five years in prison but could receive a lesser penalty under the state's sentencing guidelines.

Mike McQueary has said he happened to encounter Sandusky, then retired after decades as a Nittany Lions defensive coach, sexually abusing a boy in a team shower on a Friday night in February 2001. Other former top university officials have previously pleaded guilty for not reporting Sandusky's abuse earlier.

Spanier's lawyer, Samuel Silver, said he would appeal.

Board of Trustees chairman Ira M. Lubert responded to the email and expressed sympathy for Sandusky's victims.

Lord is up for re-election to the Board of Trustees in May.

Lord's position on the board of trustees was earned by way of an election by alumni.
