The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is linking textured breast implants to a rare blood cancer.
The exact number of cases "remains hard to determine", the FDA said, though data indicates that the occurrence of BIA-ALCL is more common following the implantation of breast implants with textured surfaces over those with smooth surfaces.
In most cases, it's treatable, The New York Times reported.
The FDA said it now agrees with the World Health Organization, which concluded years ago this type of lymphoma can develop following breasts implants.
The number of ALCL cases related to breast implants is hard to determine, the FDA said, because of a lack of reporting data.
The cancers were more common in women who had implants with textured, rather than smooth, surfaces.
FDA indicated that 231 cases out of 359, which were reported, included data regarding the surface of the implant. The Times notes that the contents of the implants seems to be far less important than the texture, because of 312 cases where the contents were known, 126 were filled with saline and 186 were filled with silicone gel. In several cases when the lymphoma appears, by removing the implant and the tissue around it, the patient could eliminate the condition.
Symptoms of the implant-linked cancer include lumps, pain and swelling.
Nearly Half Of Canadians Oppose The Influx Of Migrants From US
A spike in refugee claims for the first two months of 2017 put Canada on track for the highest number since at least 2011. Part of the recent influx in undocumented immigrants stems from people in the U.S. crossing over the border into Canada .
Under scrutiny are implants with a textured surface - the most common type in the U.S., accounting for 99 percent of all used.
BIA-ALCL on average is diagnosed about a decade after implant surgery, according to the WHO.
The FDA has a breast implants website with more details.
Since 2011, packaging for all implants sold in the USA and Canada has listed the possible cancer risk, and advises women to discuss all the risks and options with their doctor.
If you have breast implants, there is no need to change your routine medical care and follow-up.
The FDA said that people who are considering getting breast implants should talk with their doctors about the benefits and risks of textured implants versus smooth implants.
Nevertheless, a ruptured silicone implant is more hard to detect, since its contents remain in place - unlike the saline implant, which simply deflates, making the rupture very noticeable. On Tuesday, the agency confirmed the disease can occur after breast implant surgery.
In 2011, the FDA reported that one in five women who had silicone breast implants for cosmetic purposes - and half of those who got implants after a mastectomy - needed surgery to remove the implants within a decade.
