CBI to probe Narada sting operation: Calcutta High Court

Welcoming the high court order, the Opposition parties sought the removal of the "tainted" Trinamul ministers from Ms Banerjee's government.

The division bench asked the Central Bureau of Investigation to collect within 24 hours all the documents and evidence, including the sting video footage that were submitted to the high court earlier, and conduct a preliminary inquiry within the next 72 hours.

Demanding CBI or ED probe into Narada case, at least three Public Interest Litigations (PIL) were filed before the High Court.

The court came down heavily on the police inquiry.

"The state police, unfortunately, puppets on a string, the end of which is with the respondents". Mirza within a week. The sting operation carried out by Narada news and led by its CEO Mathew Samuel, caught 11 Trinamool leaders, including 6 MPs, MLAs, and three top state ministers, besides a senior IPS official, accepting bribes from a non-existent company.

The biggest paycheck came from RT, which handed over $45,000, and during that evening, he also dined next to Vladimir Putin . The documents show that on October 14, an RT producer wrote she was "helping to organize the RT conference in December".

BJP National Secretary Rahul Sinha said: "This order is a victory of the fight against corruption", he said.

Claiming political vendetta, she attacked the Bharatiya Janata Party for the "planned" controversy.

Mamata defended her ministers and said that the BJP is behind the sting operation. "It must be only a few lakhs taken as donation during the polls".

The state opposition, however, was quick to assail Banerjee. We will appeal against this in the Supreme Court. The Chief Minister should show due respect to the High Court and sack all accused ministers. "Our party will move SC", the Bengal CM said. The Narada sting tapes, which were released to different news organisations before the 2016 assembly elections in West Bengal, showed some leaders allegedly taking money.

Soon after, in June, Banerjee ordered a probe headed by the city Police Commissioner to find out the "conspiracy" angle to the sting.
