"A Sukhoi aircraft of Indian Air Force crashed in the field of Shivkar Kudla village in Barmer while on a routine sortie".
Both the pilots of aircraft ejected safely, said the official.
The air force has ordered an inquiry into the crash.
A MiG-21 aircraft of the Indian Air Force (IAF) crashed near Barmer in Rajasthan earlier on September 10 previous year.
"Villagers told us that the pilot ejected shortly before the crash".

The Sukhoi-30MKI is twin-seater, twin engine multi-role fighter of Russian origin, capable of carrying a variety of medium-range guided air-to-air missiles with active or semi-active radar or infra-red homing close-range missiles. The Su-30MKI is reportedly going to be the backbone of IAF's fighter planes by the year 2020.
The unfortunate accident took place at 2:45 pm on Wednesday afternoon. The Sukhoi-30MKI jet had taken off from Jodhpur.
The crash comes just hours after a Chetak helicopter, also belonging to the IAF, toppled at Bamrauli near Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh. Both pilots evacuated safely, news agency ANI reported.
Last year, in September, a MiG-21 aircraft had crashed in the same area.
No casualties have been reported, said a defence official.
