The Sukhoi-30MKI is twin-seater, twin engine multi-role fighter of Russian origin, capable of carrying a variety of medium-range guided air-to-air missiles with active or semi-active radar or infra-red homing close-range missiles. The Su-30MKI is reportedly going to be the backbone of IAF's fighter planes by the year 2020.

The unfortunate accident took place at 2:45 pm on Wednesday afternoon. The Sukhoi-30MKI jet had taken off from Jodhpur.

The crash comes just hours after a Chetak helicopter, also belonging to the IAF, toppled at Bamrauli near Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh. Both pilots evacuated safely, news agency ANI reported.

Last year, in September, a MiG-21 aircraft had crashed in the same area.

No casualties have been reported, said a defence official.
