Some areas were warned to prepare for up to two feet of snow and strong winds going up to 50 miles per hour. Why do you need to know?

USA Today reports almost all flights were canceled late Monday night at the three big airports serving New York City: John F. Kennedy, LaGuardia and Newark Liberty airports. At most, about 2,750 people, based on the number of seats offered daily between New York, Boston and Hong Kong, would be affected by flight disruptions on Tuesday.

Officials have canceled hundreds of flights for Tuesday, mostly in and out of Baltimore-Washington International Airport, LaGuardia Airport, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Chicago's Midway.

One family who talked with CBS46 News says snow in Charlotte, North Carolina forced them to miss their flight to Atlanta.

Washington D.C.is expected to get roughly 3 to 4 inches of snow; New York City, 4 to 8 inches; and Boston, 7 to 11 inches. Poor weather could extend into early Wednesday at some New England airports. The airline says changes must be made prior to the original departure date for new flights departing on or before Friday, March 17, 2017.

Travelers at RDU International Airport are experiencing a trickle down effect. A difference in fare may apply, but the change fee, which is usually $200, has been waived.

Delta issued a winter weather waiver on Saturday to allow customers to make one-time schedule changes to their travel plans without fee and to move ahead of or behind the storm's Tuesday impact.

Flight cancellations at San Francisco and San Jose airports so far are just a fraction of the almost 5,000 flight cancellations nationwide.

But luck was on the side of Dahl and her mom as their flight from Kansas City to Pittsburgh was scheduled to leave on time, though a later flight to the same destination was already canceled.
