Kong: Skull Island scares up monster opening weekend at USA box office

After appearing in Skull Island, King Kong will return in 2020 for the Legendary-made film Godzilla vs. Kong. It cost $185 million to produce, which means that it will need to be a hit overseas if Legendary and Warner Bros, the studios behind the film, want to make a profit. Of course, first things first.

Kong hasn't necessarily received glowing reviews, but they've been solid with a current Metacritic score of 62, matching the score for Godzilla with critics complimenting the film's monster-on-monster fight sequences while at the same time criticizing the film's human characters and dialogue. The film earned $61 million in the USA alone, as on March 12, screening in 3,846 locations.

That said, for a Warner Bros. action film* opening in this many theaters an opening around $42 million is the average.

As director Jordan Vogt-Roberts promised, the film is chocked-full of reference points, in-jokes and specific Easter Eggs, and there's a lot of fun to be had in spotting as many as possible. The question is to wonder just how many eyeballs Kong loses given Logan is only in its second weekend.

Federal court rules 3 GOP congressional districts discriminate against Hispanics
The ruling comes as the Lone State's Latino population grew, adding four additional congressional seats after the 2010 Census. Democrats have also had some success recently challenging Republican gerrymandering of legislative districts.

The movie was expected to earn $45-50 million, but broke all expectations to smash records.

Falling to second place this week is "Logan", bringing in an estimated $38 million in its second week out.

"Kong" grossed $61 million domestically this weekend. Internationally, the film posts $81.6 million from 20,400 screens in 65 territories, making it the No. 1-grossing film in the world for the three-day period.

Coming in at No. 2 is Logan with $37.9 million, followed by Get Out at No. 3 with $21.1 million, The Shack at No. 4 with $10.1 million and The LEGO Batman Movie at No. 5 with $7.8 million. We're anticipating a dip around 31% for a $19.5 million third weekend, but wouldn't be the least bit surprised if it held on even better. The $61 million debut bests all analyst predictions for the release.
