Tony Romo Cut: Cowboys to release Romo on Thursday

The move will come at the start of the NFL's free agency period and will allow the Cowboys' all-time leader in passing yards and touchdowns to sign with any team, including the Broncos. The Denver Broncos and Houston Texans have been mentioned as potential landing spots. Should they designate him a post-June 1 cut, that savings will escalate to $14 million.

We all knew they couldn't trade Romo: The Cowboys didn't want a backup in 2017 at that cap number, and the other 31 National Football League teams knew it. By releasing him, he'll count for $19,600,000 in dead money against their cap in 2017.

Romo's release was a near foregone conclusion after rookie Dak Prescott stepped in after Romo was injured in the preseason and led the Cowboys to a 13-3 record.

McCown, who is from Jacksonville, Texas, and played at SMU and Sam Houston State, would welcome a homecoming and has told teams he wants to continue his career despite turning 38 in July. They are contenders with questions at quarterback, and Romo could be the option that gets them over the top. Dak Prescott is their future at QB, so it didn't make sense to have a almost $25 million cap hit for Romo. Romo will be free to sign with any team.

Mike Glennon Could Make $15M Per-Year in NY or Chicago
Still, he's expected to land a deal with an average annual value of around $14 million, according to reports. They selected Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston , and quickly named him the starter.

Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is likely to be released Thursday, according to ESPN.

During his tenure with the Cowboys, Romo has been plagued with injuries. Kyle Shanahan might intrigue him, but with quite a few question marks, I have to think Romo would rather go to a team closer to a Super Bowl. It makes financial sense and sense for the team long-term.

Tony Romo might have a new home soon.
