The H7 avian flu is from wild birds, though it does not pose a concern for human health. So far, no other flocks have shown the increases in mortality associated with the disease.

Tennessee borders several of the nation's largest chicken- meat-producing states, including Georgia, Alabama, Arkansas and North Carolina.

"Animal health is our top priority", Charles Hatcher, Tennessee's state veterinarian, said in a statement.

A virus that can be deadly to domesticated chickens and turkeys has been detected in Tennessee. Tyson said it is "responding aggressively" to euthanize the affected chickens, 73,500 birds in total, and does not "expect disruptions to our chicken business" at this time.

South Korea has also banned live poultry and egg imports from the U.S. after the discovery, the Agriculture Ministry said yesterday.

So far this year South Korea has shipped in almost 1,049 tonnes of US eggs, according to ministry data, accounting for more than 98 percent of its total egg imports as of March 3.

China continues trend of sinking defense budget growth
Fu said recent talks with China's neighbors had eased those tensions, a position Beijing has repeated often in recent weeks as Mr. By 2025, China would outspend all other states in the Asia-Pacific combined, the consultancy predicted.

No humans were affected in that outbreak. Previous outbreaks of bird flu in Tennessee have involved a less virulent form.

The southeast was largely spared during the last major US outbreak, which affected turkey and egg farms in the Midwest and led to the death of more than 48 million birds through mid-2015, either from infection or culling.

The U.S. has stepped up biosecurity measures aimed at preventing the spread of bird flu after the outbreak two years ago.

The state says none of the infected animals entered the food supply and chickens at the facility where it was detected are being "depopulated", while other nearby poultry facilities are being quarantined.

"The U.S. has the most robust monitoring and surveillance programs in the world - and detailed plans are in place and being executed at the federal and state level to control spreading among flocks and eliminate the virus completely, "Peterson added".

The facility, along with about 30 other farms, are under quarantine.
